Introduction

The 3-day Bario Food Festival (Pesta Nukenen) celebrates the unique food, farming, forest and cultural heritage of the Kelabit Highlands (1,000 m above sea level) – one of the last surviving intact traditionally farmed and forested highland watersheds in Borneo. It also showcases all that is special and unique about the Kelabit Highlands and its people – not for nothing is this remote mountain valley known as the “land of a hundred handshakes”. The Festival has so much to offer, including:

Bario Food FestivalWonderful local produce, skilfully prepared by unassuming local chefs with ingredients found nowhere else on Earth.

Bario Food FestivalTraditional (and not so traditional) highland games that visitors are welcome to join in.

Bario Food Festival

Concerts and spontaneous performances of authentic Kelabit music and dances.

Hints & Tips

  • You will need to bring the following items; light & comfortable clothing, torchlight, raincoat or poncho, slippers/sandals, walking shoes, sun hat,  swimwear, personal toiletries, personal medicine (ointment, pain killers, etc.), insect repellent, sun lotion, camera with extra batteries to last the trip (as you may not be able to recharge).
  • There is no guarantee of hot water in the homestay. Be prepared for cold showers.
  • The cockerels usually crow all night. If you are a light sleeper, bring some earplugs. We recommend the soft foam type, available from most pharmacies.
  • Mosquito nets are supplied. However, you should cover up or apply mosquito repellent to prevent getting bitten in and around the longhouse.
  • It is extremely impolite to refuse any food or drink by waving it away. If you are full or don’t like the look of something, just touch the offered plate or glass with your fingers.
  • Please carry small change and low value notes to buy food, drinks and souvenirs.
  • If you are vegetarian/vegan or have any food allergies, please let us know when you book so we can make the necessary arrangements.
