James Brooke’s Borneo

I visited parts of Borneo where no European had ever been before, and even in those parts the people came out and mentioned with delight the name of Brooke.

−Admiral Sir Henry Keppel

Tour Details

These tours follows in the footsteps of the first White Rajah of Sarawak, Sir James Brooke (ruled 1842 – 1868), and explore the historic First Division of Sarawak (nowadays Kuching & Samarahan Divisions), which was the original area ceded to Brooke by the Sultan of Brunei. Highlights include the charms of old Kuching, semi-wild orangutans, spectacular rainforest views, the world-famous Sarawak Cultural Village and the remarkable ecosystems of Bako National Park, with its resident Proboscis Monkeys.

Hints & Tips

  • All accommodation is air conditioned, which usually takes care of mosquitoes. However, you should cover up or apply mosquito repellent to prevent getting bitten when outdoors, especially in Bako National Park.
  • Don’t wear your best shoes. If the water is low, you may get your feet wet at Bako.
  • It is extremely impolite to refuse any food or drink by waving it away. If you are full or don’t like the look of something, just touch the offered plate or glass with your fingers.
  • The rice wine (tuak) is usually stronger than it appears.
  • Please don’t give any money, sweets or gifts to children. Anything you may wish to donate should be passed to the longhouse chief for equal distribution amongst all families. Your guide will advise.
  • Please carry small change and low value notes to buy drinks and souvenirs.
  • If you are vegetarian/vegan or have any food allergies, please let us know when you book so we can make the necessary arrangements.

Spend a fascinating time discovering the delights of Southwest Sarawak.
