Introduction

The rugged terrain of Southwest Sarawak is criss-crossed with clear, fast-flowing rivers that flow through remote rainforested areas, passing traditional Bidayuh (Land Dayak) villages and hidden limestone caves. Our Kayaking, Rafting and Caving Tours provide the perfect opportunity to get your feet wet and discover rural Borneo at its very best. You can choose from modern or traditional kayaks or build your own bamboo raft, with side trips to visit semi-wild orangutans, explore ancient caves, overnight with the friendly locals and even camp out in the jungle.

Itineraries

Semadang Kayaking Day Tour

Kuching – Semadang River Kayaking – Bidayuh Village – Jungle Waterfall – Kuching (L): Semadang River is a little over an hour’s drive from Kuching city centre and has the perfect balance between tranquil atmosphere, beautiful landscape and swift moving current. If you want to experience the fun and relaxing river trip with the majestic landscape and nature that the Borneo rainforest has to offer, this kayaking tour is for you.

Our Semadang kayaking day trips allow beginners, school groups and even children (6 years and older) with a very basic fitness level to experience a taste of the vast Bornean wilderness from a different perspective from the safety of a sturdy kayak. No prior experience is necessary since your guide will teach you all the techniques you will need on location.

09:00 hrs – Pick-up from your hotel in Kuching and drive through scenic countryside to the Bidayuh village of Kampung Bengoh, where your guide will explain the unique features of the river. After a quick safety briefing and practice, you will begin your 11km kayak tour by gently paddling down the river, where you are likely to be amazed by the beauty of the surrounding landscape. You’ll be making a stop at small waterfall along the river before heading to lunch stop at another Bidayuh village – Kampung Danu. After lunch you will kayak downstream to a small cave then another stop at Tanjung Baru for swimming. Trip ends at around 14:30 hrs then transfer back to Kuching – time may vary depending on the pace of the group.

Note: Please bring along a change of clothes and towel for return trip, hat/cap, sunblock, suitable shoes or sandals for the trip (flip-flops or thongs are not advisable).

You may also choose to visit the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre en route to watch the semi-wild Orangutans at feeding time. There will be a small surcharge for this side trip and departure time from Kuching is 08:00 hrs

Semadang Kayaking & Caving Day Tour

Kuching – Semadang River Kayaking – Bidayuh Village – Jungle Waterfall – Limestone Cave Exploration – Kuching (L): The first part of this trip is identical to the Kayaking Day Tour above.  You will begin the tour with kayaking down the Semadang river passing through impressive mountains that line the Bengoh range and making a few stops at small waterfall and at Danu Bidayuh village for lunch. After lunch, you embark on your journey to the limestone cave. This wild and undeveloped cave under Bengoh Range near Semadang is quite unique that you’ll be able to explore the large passage of the limestone cave. By wild we mean no interior lightings, no handrails, no walkways; a cave in its natural state. So don’t forget to wear loose fitting, comfortable clothing and hiking shoes or ribber boots with snug fit and a good tread. The guides will lead you through the cave entrance where big fig tree roots clings to the limestone walls. After rainfall thousands of little bats cluster on the cave ceiling to leave at dusk to feed on insects. There is one crawling section or tight passageway but it is easily navigable with guides’ instruction.

After lunch, transfer to limestone cave for cave exploration activities. Trip ends at around 15.30 hrs then transfer back to Kuching – time may vary depending on the pace of the group.

Note: Please bring along a change of clothes and towel for return trip, hat/cap, sunblock, suitable hiking shoes or rubber boots for the trip (sandals, flip-flops or thongs are not advisable). You will need to be moderately fit for the caving activities, which are not suitable for children under 12.

2 Days 1 Night Peraya Homestay & Jungle Rafting

Kampung Peraya is a Bidayuh village in the Padawan Range, roughly an hour’s drive from Kuching. The people of Kampung Peraya have been operating their homestay and river rafting adventures since 2006 and are committed to 100% sustainable tourism.

Day 1 – Kuching – Semenggoh Orang Utan Centre – Peraya Village – Jungle Trekking (L D): Pick up from hotel at 08:00 and proceed to the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre to observe the semi-wild Orangutans during feeding time (09:00 – 10:00). Over 20 rehabilitated and locally born Orangutans roam this forest reserve, and many still return for extra feeding at the stations. Continue past padi fields, pepper gardens and rugged mountain scenery to Peraya Village, for a traditional lunch with your host family. After lunch, spend the afternoon jungle trekking, visiting the ancient skull-house en route. After a refreshing swim at a remote jungle waterfall, head back to Peraya Homestay for dinner, then proceed for a nature walk to experience the sights and sounds of the rainforest at night (weather permitting). Overnight at Peraya Homestay.

Day 2 – Jungle Rafting – Kuching (B L D): After breakfast, experience the Borneo Rainforest from a fresh perspective, in a bamboo raft or traditional kayak, paddling through class I and II water. You may choose to split your group into adventurous kayakers and scenic rafters to create optimum enjoyment for each individual. Between rapids your guides will share the river’s secrets — local history, fish spawning habits, how the community uses native plants — and introduce you to the Sarawak’s invigorating outdoors. The lush rainforest abounds with delicious wild plants and ferns;  help your local guides to harvest these vegetables and transform them into spectacular delicacies via the ancient tribal art of cooking in bamboo.
