The Great Orangutan Tour 

This tour is absolutely unique, offering the opportunity to visit Borneo’s four most important and successful Orangutan Conservation and Rehabilitation Centres; Sepilok in Sabah, Semenggoh and Matang in Sarawak and Tanjung Puting National Park in Central Kalimantan. It also includes active participation in orangutan conservation, as well as fascinating side trips to pristine rainforest locations to view wild orangutans, proboscis monkeys and other iconic species. 

10 Days / 9 Nights Sabah - Sarawak (Malaysia) - Kalimantan (Indonesia)

Day 01 – Sandakan – Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre – Sukau – Kinabatangan River Cruise (B L D): Meet on arrival at Sandakan Airport. Proceed to Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, where orphaned and injured orangutans are brought to be rehabilitated to return to forest life. Witness the feeding of orangutan from a platform in the forest, watch a video documentary presentation for an insight into the orangutan rehabilitation process and threats to their survival. This is followed by an exclusive visit to the Orangutan Nursery, to which the public are not usually granted access (please note that no contact with the juvenile orangutans is permitted). Proceed overland for 2.5 hours to Sukau. Check-in and lunch at your eco-friendly lodge. In the late afternoon, proceed for a river cruise in a battery-powered boat to the Menanggol River, a tributary of the Kinabatangan, to search for wildlife, including the unique proboscis monkey, hornbills, kingfishers and many others. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 02 – Sukau – Oxbow Lake – Nature Trek – River Cruise (B L D): Wake up early to the sounds of gibbons and hornbills, and take a pre-breakfast cruise up the Kinabatangan River to Kelenanap Oxbow Lake to view more birds and wildlife. After breakfast, take a nature trek through the Kinabatangan Wildlife Corridor in search of pygmy elephants and other species. Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, take a cruise along the Kinabatangan in search of more wildlife. Wild orangutans are occasionally seen in the area. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Day 03 – Sukau – Gomantong Cave – Sandakan City Tour – Kuching (B ): After breakfast, depart for Gomantong Cave. From your vehicle, the cave is a 20-minute walk through unique limestone vegetation and lowland forest. Here you can observe birds and primates, and wild orangutans are occasionally seen. Explore one of the most fascinating caves in Sabah, home to millions of bats, as well as swiftlets whose edible nests are collected for China’s famous bird’s nest soup. Return to historic Sandakan for a city tour including Pui Jih Shih Chinese temple (located 300m above sea level with a commanding view of Sandakan bay), the bustling market and Sim Sim water village, a mixed Chinese and Malay village built from quaint stilt houses. Transfer to Sandakan airport for your return flight to Kota Kinabalu at 1250 Hrs connecting Kuching at 1945 Hrs (Note: as this is quite a long layover, guests can take an optional city tour of Kota Kinabalu for a modest surcharge). Meet on arrival at Kuching International Airport and transfer to your preferred hotel for overnight.

Day 04 – Kuching – Heart2Heart With Orangutan at Matang & Semenggoh (B L): Breakfast at hotel. 0815 Hrs – Meet and greet by our guide and depart for Matang Wildlife Centre to participate in Sarawak Forestry’s Heart2Heart With Orangutan conservation programme. Learn from a dedicated team of Sarawak Forestry experts about the challenges of orangutan rehabilitation, get to work hands-on performing everyday conservation activities at Matang Wildlife Centre, then transfer to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre to see the results of successful orangutan rehabilitation. All participants receive a certificate acknowledging their contribution to Sarawak’s orangutan conservation programme and will have the opportunity to take part in Sarawak Forestry’s Orangutan Adoption Programme (Note: all monies paid to Sarawak Forestry for this day’s activities are used exclusively for conservation purposes). Return back to hotel and overnight.

Day 05 – Bako National Park Day Trip (B L): After breakfast in your hotel, depart at 8.30 for a day trip to fascinating Bako National Park. The journey is 35 minutes to Bako Jetty, followed by a scenic 20 minute boat ride. Your guide will lead you on one or two of the easier trails, exploring seven distinct plant ecosystems in search of the bizarre Proboscis Monkey and the dainty Silver Leaf Monkey, both unique to Borneo. A boat ride to view the famous Sea Stack is optional with a small additional charge, weather permitting. Lunch will be served in the park canteen. Return to hotel in the mid or late afternoon (depending on tide). In the evening free at leisure to explore Kuching’s gastronomic delights.

Day 06 – Kuching – Pontianak (B): Early transfer to Kuching International Airport for flight departure to Pontianak, which is not only the capital of West Kalimantan but also the only city in the world named after a mythical vampire. After departing Pontianak airport, breakfast at a local restaurant. Transfer to Gardenia Resort, then free at own leisure. In the afternoon, take a Pontianak City Tour including the State Museum, the Grand Mosque, the Kadariah Palace and the Equator Monument. Overnight at Gardenia Resort.

Day 07 – Pontianak – Pangkalanbun – Kumai – Tanjung Puting National Park (B L D): Early transfer to airport for flight to Pangkalanbun (by Kal Star), Upon arrival at Pangkalanbun, transfer to Kumai (20 mins) to board your motorboat for a 3-hour cruise up the Sekonyer River. Along the way you can enjoy the beautiful flora & fauna, including birds, monkeys, gibbons, and other wonderful creatures of Borneo. Check in to Rimba Eco-Lodge at Tanjung Puting National Park. After lunch, relax and enjoy the natural surroundings, including the resident troops of proboscis monkeys and macaques. After dark, enjoy the stunning display of fireflies amidst the nipah palms. Dinner and overnight at lodge.

Day 08 – Pondok Tanggui – Camp Leakey (B L D): After breakfast, board a local klotok boat to visit Pondok Tanggui, an orangutan feeding station up Sekonyer River, then proceed to Camp Leakey, Dr Birute Galdikas’s world famous orangutan research and rehabilitation centre. Meet some of the world-famous residents, then trek through the tropical rainforest searching for the wildlife and the exotic tropical flora. Return to Rimba Eco-Lodge for dinner and overnight.

Day 09 – Pelasat – Tanjung Harapan (B L D): Enjoy your breakfast on board the klotok boat while cruising to Pelasat Forest Replantation Site, a locally-run conservation and education area. Continue to Tanjung Harapan to visit a traditional local village, then trek through the jungle following ancient native trails in search of more wildlife, including a good possibility of semi-wild and wild orangutans. Lunch on board, dinner at Rimba Eco-Lodge, than enjoy an informative film about Camp Leakey’s conservation work.  Overnight at lodge.

Day 10 – Pangkalanbun – Pontianak (B): After breakfast, cruise back down the Sekonyer River to Kumai for transfer to Pangkalanbun airport for your onward flight.

Hints & Tips

  • Mosquito nets are supplied where necessary. However, you should cover up or apply mosquito repellent to prevent getting bitten.
